Situation
Kurt Levy, my grandfather made lots of art over the course of his life in a variety of styles and media.
The task
To design a website that would showcase his work with a page for curated work as well as a page for all work where art works could be tagged, categorised and filtered. Of course it needed to be responsive.
The Team
Design Director – Tom Lowein-Levy
Developer – Jake Snellin
Throughout the site the images are given full priority with minimal distractions and simple fading page transitions.
The all work page has a dropdown which filters the work, on mobile a different layout is used. Clicking on an image opens the gallery where you can browse 1 image at a time displayed at a larger size (see below).
Mobile layouts, on the left is the biography page, on the right the gallery page.
Process
Before settling on the final layout, other options were explored including a side scrolling design. After research into UX best practice it was decided it would not be used. There was a large number of images and horizontal scrolling is more difficult.
The typography is industrial and German in reference to his career as a manufacturer.
